Misconceptions about Public Relations

October 13, 2020 Nonprofit PR & Marketing, Public Relations Best Practices

There are so many misconceptions about public relations out there! Let me break it down for you and bust some of the most common myths.

Key Points from the Video: Misconceptions about Public Relations

1. PR is just putting out press releases.
Media relations is just one aspect of public relations.

2. PR is about spinning the facts.
The values of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) are advocacy, honesty, expertise, independence, loyalty, and fairness.

3. PR is the same thing as marketing.
PR is about maintaining mutually beneficial relationships. Marketing is about selling a product or service, period.

4. PR is inauthentic.
Whether you’re talking about PR or marketing, authenticity is extremely important. People don’t want to support an organization or buy a product from a company that seems fake.

5. PR is focused on external audiences.
Internal communications is just as important, if not more so, than external relations.
